Breast cancer screening guidelines
If you are not considered high risk for developing breast cancer, we recommend the following screening protocols:
- Beginning at 20 years old, you should conduct monthly breast self-exams
- Between 20 and 39 years old, you should have a clinical breast exam every three years
- Beginning at 40 years old, you should have a mammogram and clinical breast exam every year
If you think you may be at a higher risk for developing breast cancer, our Early Action Cancer Screening program can help you manage your risk factors. For more information about the program, please call (912) 350-1537.
Breast imaging and diagnostics
Our hospital offers multiple breast imaging options to screen for cancer and obtain any potential diagnoses. We typically use the following tests:
- 3D mammography
- Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Breast ultrasound
If an abnormality is found during your screening exam, we will perform additional testing to determine if breast cancer is present. Some of these services may include:
- MRI-guided breast biopsy
- Stereotactic needle breast biopsy
- Ultrasound-guided needle breast biopsy

3D mammogram screening services
We are proud to use 3D mammography to aid us in the fight against breast cancer. 3D mammograms are able to show more detail, and can detect tumors at earlier stages than previous forms of mammograms.
Using 3D technology to capture images in slices, your doctor is able to easily scroll through them, examining every fine layer with greater visibility. Being able to examine breast tissue in this way cuts down on the need for additional testing, reducing stress related to unnecessary call-backs.
Benefits of 3D mammograms
3D mammograms offer many benefits when compared to traditional 2D mammography, including:
- Clearer image quality
- Increase in the detection of invasive cancers
- Less radiation exposure
- Reduced risk for false positives
3D mammography is the recommended form of imaging if you have:
- Breast cancer diagnosis
- Dense breast tissue
- Family history of cancer
- History of repeat breast scan call-backs
- Past biopsies for suspicious masses or lesions
- Previous mammograms providing inconclusive results
Anyone is able to request a 3D mammogram, and no physician referral is needed. Depending on your insurance plan, additional fees may apply to 3D mammography.
